The Presidents Cup

The Presidents Cup is becoming a fantastic and 'feel good' competition in the world of golf today. PGA TOUR commissioner Tim Finchem's agenda with this important event was to bring the best American players together with world-class players NOT eligible for the Ryder Cup, forming their own Ryder Cup-esque tournament. Does it bother me that we now have two world team competitions, one each year? Not at all! In fact, I always wanted to be on a Presidents Cup team but never qualified. My two Ryder Cup apperances are still the most cherished accomplishments of my career. Having the chance to represent your country alongside your friends and heroes like Lee Trevino, Jay Haas, Tom Lehman, Brad Faxon, Ben Crenshaw, Ray Floyd, Curtis Strange and Fuzzy Zoeller is something I will never forget.

Should the Presidents Cup bother anyone in the world of golf? I don't see how or why it could. We get to see the greatest players of our time from around the globe going 'head to head' now EVERY year instead of once every TWO years. We all get "Ryder Cup Fever" but it had to build over a two year period. With the Presidents Cup we get to watch a challenging and interesting team competition every year. I love that!!

I will be in front of my TV for every Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup because first and foremost, I'm a golf fan. Even if I'm not on the team, it still gets my full attention watching these incredibly talented players...and I think that there are a lot of people who are just like me.

Good shots, great putts and incredible up and downs are the norm with these great players. But we see missed putts, bad chips and emotional outbursts from both sides, too. If I were to attend one of these team events as a spectator I would be pulling hard for another USA victory. When you know the guys from both teams so well, it's hard to root against anyone...so I choose to root for my country and my flag.

Whether it's the Ryder Cup or The Presidents Cup, the spirit of the competition and the respect these players show for the game and each other is what makes the great game of golf and these honorable competitors stand out in this very controversial and disappointing world of sports.

At least, that's my take...what's yours?
