Impact-A-Hero 2009

I had the chance to spend time with some of our nation's finest young men and women Monday, June 1 at the Impact-A-Hero event in Houston, Texas. This organization raises money in support of returning veterans of the war in Iraq, helping them to assimilate back into society in many ways.

My good friends Dick Lynch and Deacon Lewis asked me to get involved about four years ago and it has been an absolute honor to take part. It is amazing to meet so many brave young men and women, many who have suffered greatly. Many of these soldiers have suffered brain and spinal cord injuries, as well as losing multiple limbs in combat. One very special young man is Joey Bozik, who lost both legs and his right arm in explosion outside Baghdad. Joey never lost his love of the game of golf and has again become an excellent player. He shows his courage every day, and to see him hit a tee shot sitting on his specially built golf cart is incredibly inspiring. With two prosthetic legs and a custom-fit right arm and hand, he can fly his drives about 250 yards! He and his wife Jamie just welcomed the newest addition to their family, their first child Violet, four months ago. I am so happy for Joey and Jamie and expect to see Joey playing more and more golf in the future. I'm sure he'll be out-driving me very soon!

At least that's my take...what's yours?
